The Marathi Shala of Kansas City is a community-driven initiative, started in 2014 and run entirely by a team of dedicated volunteers.
The primary goal of the Shala is to help children speak, read, and write in Marathi, while also introducing them to the richness of Marathi culture and traditions.
Children aged 5 years and above learn Marathi in a structured yet fun environment, with classes held every Sunday on a weekly basis.

Marathi Shala is affiliated with Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal (BMM) Marathi Shala. The BMM Marathi Shala curriculum was developed by BMM in association with Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune. The curriculum is designed for NRI children. Students can appear for the BMM- Bharati Vidyapeeth exams whenever they are ready to progress to the next level. Certificates are provided by BMM/Bharati Vidyapeeth. Please note that these examinations are optional.
Students progress through a total of 6 levels in the program. The level of each student is based on an initial assessment conducted by the Shala teachers when a student joins the program. If a student joins the program at age 5, he or she will join the शिशु गट and then advance through the rest of the 5 levels (Level 1 through Level 5) at their own pace.
Students are encouraged to progress at their own pace and there is no pressure to achieve a certain level in a certain amount of time. The emphasis is on having fun, while learning Marathi!
As a general rule of thumb, 60% of the cirriculum focuses on oral communication, while the remaining 40% focuses on reading-writing skills. This breakdown varies by each level.
The curriculum also includes Marathi stories, Shlokas, poems, festival celebrations such as Diwali workshops, and introductions to prominent Maharashtrian figures such as Shri Shivaji Maharaj, Shri Ramdas Swami, and Sant Dnyaneshwar.
Students get an opportunity to showcase their newly acquired language skills during the annual program.
